Microstructure of γ-Fe2O3particles: A response to Andress et al.

A paper by Andress et al. [2] attempts to summarize and respond to the data and conclusions in a paper by Berkowitz et al. [1]. In this paper, we show that their summary of our results is inaccurate and present additional evidence which confirms the original conclusions, namely, the γ-Fe
2
O
3
particles we examined were single crystals with predominantly [110] oriented longitudinal axes and symmetric cross sections. Pores and anti-phase-boundaries were the principal defects. No correlation was noted between porosity as measured from transmission electron micrographs and either coercive force or print through.
