From a very young age, Tom Sparling knew that the blood of an engineer and entrepreneur coursed through his veins. In his formative years, much to his mother's dismay, he started exhibiting these tendencies by building and tearing apart radios. He loved solving the most difficult engineering problems. During his extensive engineering career, this passion led him to design sophisticated control systems for waterfront cranes, floating drawbridges, and communication stations.

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?isnumber=6148544&arnumber=6112292

With the ever-increasing importance of electricity, excellent service reliability is no longer a luxury in the eyes of consumers but an expectation. In response to this expectation, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) is making a significant investment in a new technology to help improve reliability. This technology uses an automated feeder reconfiguration scheme that not only minimizes the duration of an outage due to a fault and the number of customers impacted by it but also reduces the number of customers experiencing a blink and subsequent switching. PSE&G has implemented an innovative solution designed to improve its reliability indices. The advanced loop scheme (ALS) builds on the PSE&G standard distribution scheme that used a normally open tie to separate the two feeders. This article examines the design and implementation of the ALS. It gives the specific settings and operational details for the scheme. Additionally, a review of the operational history highlights the impact that the scheme has had on the reliability of the utility distribution network.

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?isnumber=6148544&arnumber=6112335

In motion control of electric vehicles (EVs), the undetectable road conditions and varying vehicle parameters challenge the steering ability and validity. This article investigates a new traction control (TC) approach that uses the maximum transmissible torque estimation (MTTE) scheme to carry out the antislip control of EVs. A closed-loop disturbance observer is employed to enhance the steering stability and to improve the robustness on perturbation in wheel inertia of the MTTE approach. This proposed scheme, which contains the closed-loop friction torque estimator, does not require the use of any differentiator. Additionally, the inversion of the controlled plant is unnecessary. The real experiment demonstrated the effectiveness and feasibility of the presented antislip strategy.

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?isnumber=6148544&arnumber=6119248

Chock temperature control is an important issue in cold rolling mills. Traditional wired systems don't offer satisfactory results for practical use. Because of very low power consumption using Zigbee (IEEE 802.15.4) wireless technology, temperature sensors (up to 125 C) suitable for a tandem cold mill environment have been developed. The complete monitoring system includes repeaters, a base receiver with transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) gateway, and a maintenance software. The results obtained in the tandem mill are collected.

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?isnumber=6148544&arnumber=6148570

Repetitive control was applied to dc motor drive speed regulation in a flatbed scanner to reject the motor cogging torque. A discrete time prototype repetitive controller was designed and integrated into an existing feedback loop using the plug-in concept to reject the periodic cogging torque under a constant reference speed. System identification was conducted to obtain the repetitive control plant model. With the augmented repetitive controller, the periodic speed error was attenuated by approximately 75%. Also, a robustness criterion was developed to guarantee successful implementation on real systems.

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?isnumber=6148544&arnumber=6119247

In this article, a model predictive current controller for multilevel inverters driving electrical machines is proposed. The inverter switch positions are directly set by the controller, thus avoiding the use of a modulator. Admissible switching sequences are enumerated, and a state-space model of the drive is used to predict the drive's response to each sequence. The predicted short-term switching losses are evaluated and minimized. The concept of extrapolation and the use of bounds achieve an effective prediction horizon of up to 100 time steps despite the short switching horizon.

Electric heat tracing systems have been around for decades. They are often taken for granted until a failure disrupts a process and, in the worst-case scenario, causes a costly unit-wide shutdown of an industrial facility. This is especially the case in the petroleum and chemical industries, where critical processes have evolved, requiring tighter control and monitoring along with predictive diagnostics. Using proven technologies, heat tracing systems can be brought into the 21st century with real-time protection, monitoring, and control to improve process reliability.
