Entering Special Characters

In Advanced Search, you can include special characters such as Greek letters and mathematical symbols in your search expressions. You can also specify subscripted and superscripted characters to search for the names of chemical compounds, exponents in mathematical expressions, and other information.

Entering subscripts and superscripts

To enter a character as a subscript or superscript, use the following syntax:

 

/sub character/

(for subscript)

 

 

or

 

/sup character/

(for superscript)

where character is the character to specify as a subscript or superscript.

Entering symbols

To enter a symbol such as a Greek letter or mathematical symbol, use the following syntax:

/spl charactercode/

where charactercode is the IEEE Xplore® character code representing the symbol for which you want to search. For IEEE Xplore® character codes, see one of the following tables:

·      Greek Letters

·      Mathematical Symbols

·      Miscellaneous Symbols

Examples

H /sub 2/ O

Matches any record containing the chemical formula for water.

/spl pi/ r /sup 2/

Matches any record containing the equation for the area of a circle.
