A unique alphanumeric code assigned to serial and monographic publications and used as a permanent identifier. The CODEN system was developed in 1963 by the American Society for Testing and Materials for scientific and technical publications, but has since expanded in scope. In 1975, the Chemical Abstracts Service assumed responsibility for the assignment and dissemination of CODEN designations.
