Combined visual and textual programming methodology for signal-based automatic avionics testing systems

The present paper investigates the programming paradigms currently used in test and measurement applications, comparing the features of textual and visual languages. Based on this analysis, the paper proposes a combined programming methodology, with visual languages being used for diagnosis, while both textual and visual languages are supported for implementing test and instrument control functionality. This approach offers important benefits in reducing development and maintenance costs, while maximizing the potential for software reuse. It is very well suited for the automated testing of modern avionics equipment, characterized by: 1) high complexity designs; 2) requiring functional testing at a higher level of assembly; and 3) an extended operational lifetime.
