A conductive polymer sensor for the measurement of palmar pressures

A conductive polymer pressure sensor for use in measuring palmar pressures has been investigated. The sensor will be used in a sensory substitution system consisting of a glove with inlaid pressure sensors and an electrotactile stimulator. The criteria for the sensor, which led to the selection of the Interlink sensor, are outlined. Encasing the sensor in silicone rubber provides a durable means of attachment to the hand while maintaining dexterity. Initial results obtained using a pneumatic calibrator are described. They indicate that the sensor will be useful in characterizing hand pressures. Results of performance tests are reported.<>
