Development of X-ray facility Baikal based on 900 MJ inductive store and related problems

Summary form only given. TRINITI develops a project of multiterawatt generator "Baikal" to produce powerful pulses of soft X-rays, using electric pulse power 500-1000 TW. The project is based on unique complex of 3 pulsed electric generators with inductive store and switches, situated in TRINITI. Parameters of proposed X-ray generator are: X-ray pulse energy-5-10 MJ, X-ray pulse duration-10 ns, load current amplitude-50 MA, load current pulse duration-100 ns, method of X-ray generation-Z-pinch and liner implosion. There are 3 stages of power multiplication, using inductive stores and explosive switches, a magnetic compressor on imploding metallic liner and plasma opening switch in "Baikal" scheme. Two main directions of scientific activity for "Baikal" program are developing now. To prove the main problems of the "Baikal" scheme an experimental installation "MOL" is under construction in TRINITI. On this installation the main principles of "Baikal" power multiplication will be tested at /spl sim/1/32 level of total "Baikal" power. The physics of radiating composite Z-pinches and liner implosion is being investigated on "Angara-5-1" for the "Baikal" purpose at 5 MA, 5 TW level. The main problems to solve are: liner implosion at prolonged plasma production conditions in heterogeneous plasma producing substances, dynamics of noncylindrical liner, mechanism of magnetic energy transfer to X-ray radiation.
