Upper management's role

It starts at the top. The trickle down theory is more than a lame economic notion. It is a leadership reality. Employees take their cues from what they perceive will please those at the top....for the most part. Even if employees grumble that upper management doesn't know what it is doing, employees will follow anyhow or leave. And actions do speak louder than words in the long run. In the beginning, words have meaning but then what follows is compared to those speeches. This is when people become believers or follow simply because in the overall scheme of things upper management holds the power. According to Pat Pitcher, who has been a executive and board member of multi-billion dollar corporations, there are three primary types heading organizations: technocrats, artists and craftsmen. They each have their preferred way of leading. This paper briefly outlines the three leadership styles and their effects on management of change.
