Service quality measures for motor starting

Good relationships between utilities and their customers have always depended on quality service. In today's climate of changing customer types on rural systems and deregulation issues, standard electric service of the past is no longer acceptable. A customer's perception of "quality" depends on the type of customer, the type of appliances and equipment being used by the customer, and the required service continuity. Motors are the most common type of electric load regardless of customer class. Motor starting has been a matter of concern since the beginning of the electrification of rural America. Service quality is not solely based on the evaluation of traditional flicker concerns. This paper discusses the classification of customers and outlines a procedure to determine service quality measures for motor starting. These measures are utilized in the analysis of motors ranging in size from small motors to large, special service applications.
