Measured antenna performance of an EHF hybrid scan array antenna for MILSATCOM applications

Advances in the development of a hybrid scan array antenna that positions its beam by a combination of mechanical antenna motion and electronic scanning are reported. The antenna is intended as a cost-effective alternative to conformal fully phased arrays for airborne satellite communications terminals where radar cross section (RCS) or low aerodynamic drag are key design issues. The EHF design uses a tilted array located below the level of the fuselage. It is protected by a radome which is contoured to the aircraft surface. The installation is flush, meeting performance from zenith to 20 degrees above the horizon.<
