Cycle 22: geomagnetic storm threats to power systems continue

The power system problems posed by solar cycle 22, which began in late 1986 and is turning out to be one of the most active sunspot cycles on record, are discussed. The particular vulnerability of nuclear power plants is argued. Approaches to mitigating the problem are considered. The need for more data to enable geomagnetic storms to be forecast accurately is stressed, and some planned and proposed programs are described.<
