Technical interfaces connecting peripherals to host computers

The author surveys the technical possibilities for interfacing peripheral devices with host systems. The main emphasis is on magnetic-disk interfaces, because of their predominance, but other types of peripheral interface are also considered. Classification provides the basis for a universally acceptable terminology standard. The various interfacing technologies currently used are discussed, together with the associated restrictions, illustrating the basic demands which will in future be placed on state-of-the-art (that is, intelligent) interfaces. The author compares established methods with newer alternatives and evaluates the options available. The current situation vis-a-vis standardization of peripheral interfaces is examined, together with the prospects for future development. Finally, the author evaluates transition and replacement options suitable for today's established interfaces, with a view to creating tomorrow's standards.<
