Searching scientific databases for guides to experiment and theory

Based on information derived from bibliographic titles in the INSPEC database, this report identifies trends in experimental and theoretical materials research. It considers three specific questions: which chemical elements in the given literature are most widely studied by experiment and simulation; how did the experiment and theory of these materials change from 1989 to 1999; and can we observe any trends from such work?.
