Color constancy: a biological model and its application for still and video images

A novel biological model for color constancy (CC) is presented. This is the first biological model that succeeds in achieving automatic color correction of real still and video images (registered patent). It is based on two chromatic adaptation mechanisms in retinal color-coded cells: local adaptation and remote chromatic adaptation. Our simulations calculate the perceived image in order to correct image colors (as is commonly required in cameras). The results indicate that the contribution of adaptation mechanisms to CC is significant, robust, and succeeded in performing color correction of still images and video sequences under single and multiple illumination conditions.
