Performance of a OTDOA-IPDL positioning receiver for 3GPP-FDD mode

Location services (LCS) are gaining increasing commercial interest in the mobile communications industry, with exponential growth predicted for the next decade. The capability of finding the accurate position of a mobile phone is one of the features that will help third generation (3G) systems in reaching a wide success triggering a high number of innovative interactive applications. This paper gives an overview of algorithms for positioning a mobile phone using 3GPP-FDD mode signals. The OTDOA-IPDL mechanism is detailed, and implemented in a typical simulation scenario. The performance of the system is evaluated in different environments, showing the severe effects of multipath over the radio link.
