Forces in screen-secondary linear reluctance motors

In a screen-secondary linear reluctance motor (LRM), a nonmagnetic conducting barrier separates the primary from the secondary. A new model of segmental-secondary LRMs is presented in which the secondary induced magnetization is represented by a current sheet related to the d- and q-axis components of the air-gap flux density; this is equivalent to the earlier use of a scalar magnetic potential. Induced currents in the barrier are represented by a current sheer as in linear induction motors. Expressions are given for the air-gap flux density, the tractive force, and the normal force. Graphs are presented for the variation of force with velocity for an experimental LRM with a stainless-steel barrier.<
