Development of locomotive wheels for improved adhesion and life

This paper describes a cooperative research and development effort between a forged railroad wheel producer and a locomotive manufacturer to improve locomotive wheel/rail adhesion by using stainless steel tires and wheels. The importance of adhesion and wheel life for locomotive service performance is discussed. A review of the initial project assumptions and background research information is provided to establish the basis for using stainless steel as a material. Forging trials, tire and wheel production issues, and heat treating details are discussed. Mechanical properties and other testing results for stainless steel tires and wheels are reviewed with special emphasis placed upon wheel saw cut testing. Results from adhesion trials are also discussed.
