Motion compensated interpolation techniques for HD-MAC

Motion compensated interpolation techniques adapted to the MAC compatible coding and decoding of high definition television pictures are presented. These techniques one allow to interpolate intermediate fields, on the receiver side, without introducing either judder or blur. Benefit is taken from this to increase the spatial resolution of high definition decoded pictures. It is possible, with these techniques, to design a very flexible HD-MAC system, which could be gradually tuned from a very compatible configuration with relatively modest HD performance, to a final very high HD level. Motion compensated interpolation has become now a reality and provides for Europeans the breakthrough they need to support the evolutionary approach towards HDTV they often advocated.<
