75 years of columnar ionization: George Jaffe

A discussion is presented of the work of George Cecil Jaffe, who carried out a series of experimental studies which were devoted to the investigation of the natural and the radiation-induced conductivity of n-hexane, a liquid hydrocarbon. He used the radiation emitted from a radium source and measured the increase in conductivity, charge carrier mobilities, and recombination coefficients. In 1913 he published his famous paper 'Zur Theorie der Ionisation in Kolonnen' (theory of columnar ionization) which was to become a classic. He treated the problem of recombination of charge carriers which were produced in close spatial correlation.<
