Neurocomputing in teletraffic: multifractal spectrum approximation

The explosive growth of electronics, computers and telecommunications has marked the recent past. Moreover, different multimedia requirements became the driving force in the development of new transfer techniques; asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) being the most promising one. These rather new techniques have already changed the traffic type. According to the ubiquitous variable bit rates the traffic appeared to be fractal. As a consequence of multiplexing of different bursty traffic streams, a multifractal phenomenon, usually described by the multifractal spectrum, arises. This paper explains the complex nature of modern teletraffic. Having in mind the high variability of its performances, the new computational technique based on radial basis function seems to be a promising solution in the approximation of the multifractal spectra.
