Finite-Set MRAS Observer for Encoderless Control of PMSGs in Wind Turbine Applications

This paper introduces a finite-set model reference adaptive system (FS-MRAS) observer for encoder-less control of surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous generators (SM-PMSGs) in variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). The proposed algorithm replaces the traditional constant-gain proportional integral (CGPI), which usually used in the adaptation mechanism of the traditional MRAS observer. The concept of the suggested algorithm is driven from the finite set-model predictive control (FS-MPC) principle, where a certain number of rotor position angles are used to estimate the stator flux of the SM-PMSG. The angle optimizing a certain quality function is chosen to be the best rotor position angle. The proposed FS-MRAS observer is validated and compared with the traditional MRAS observer at different conditions by experimental data.
