Modeling and simulation of vehicle ride and handling performance

This paper provides a detailed derivation of a full car vehicle model which may be used to simulate cornering and braking maneuvers. The dynamics of a six degree of freedom vehicle spring-mass are derived and integrated with an analytical tire dynamics model which allows for simulation of realistic cornering and braking behaviors. The model may be used to determine vehicle translational motions, as well as roll, pitch, and yaw, based on driver inputs at the steering wheel and brake pedal, and bump inputs from the road. Finally, the model can be used to investigate the benefits of an active damping control scheme on vehicle ride quality and handling performance.
