Public transportation priority systems combined with multiple traffic control strategies

The traffic congestion will get worse when more people utilize their cars for their trips. So, the number of people using the buses will also decrease. It then results in the more use of cars. Therefore, it lends to the pollution of the environment. To reduce the traffic demands and improve the environment, the Kanagawa Prefectual Police HQ developed a public transportation priority systems (PTPS) with a combination of some signal control methods. PTPS constitutes a subsystem of the Universal Traffic Management Systems 21 (UTMS 21) concept that is promoted by the National Police Agency. This paper describes the background of the PTPS in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Pref., illustrates the functions of the PTPS, and discusses the effectiveness of the system.
