Third eGrid Workshop Maps the Grid of the Future: Attendees Engage to Examine the Role of Power Electronic Applications in Modern Electric Power Systems

Attendees engage to examine the role of power electronic applications in modern electric power systems. Distributed energy resources (DERs), bulk grid events, grid stability and resilience, microgrids, standards, power quality, and high-voltage dc (HVDC) technologies were among the topics of interest at the third IEEE International Workshop on Electronic Grid (eGrid). IEEE eGrid 2018, hosted by Clemson University in Charleston, South Carolina, 12-14 November 2018, provided a platform for examining the role of power electronic applications in modern electric utilities. Power electronics is currently changing from an enabling technology for renewable generation and energy efficiency to an underpinning technology for grid modernization, electronic transmission, and distribution grids that can effectively manage electricity among many power electronic-based sources and loads. Power electronic based sources and loads will be prominent in the grid of the future.
