XML-based data systems for Earth science applications

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a new standard supported by the W3 consortium. This standard has applications in many areas including Earth science data system development. The exchange of data and metadata among users and providers is, however, frequently complicated by issues such as multiple data formats and lack of metadata standardization. XML-based systems have many advantages such as content manipulation, dynamic and flexible presentation, and enhanced search and interoperability. The authors describe how XML can be applied to Earth science metadata based on the NASA GSFC XML prototype project, with a summary of work conducted to date and plans for future work.
