Power quality protection using a platform-mounted SCD-demonstration project experience

A new era of power quality solutions has been ushered in with the installation of the first series compensation device (SCD) mounted on a platform for overhead distribution system application to serve mid-size industrial and commercial loads. The Dynamic Voltage Restorer/sup TM/ Platform Mounted (DVR/sup TM/ PM) prototype was installed on a major North American utility system to protect a 600 kVA load from disturbances coming from the utility 25 kV distribution system. Northern Lights Community College in Dawson Creek, BC is being protected by the DVR/sup TM/ PM, built by Siemens for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). This paper describes the DVR/sup TM/ PM and the demonstration project installation, commissioning and initial operation.
