Performance analysis of power up function in position location systems

The FCC has mandated that cellular carriers should provide mobile station position location within a given accuracy. Multilateration techniques demand the mobile station to be heard by at least three base stations. A way to improve the visibility of a mobile station is to increase transmit power levels for short periods of time. This capability is known as the power up function (PUF). This work evaluates, based on Campbell's theorem, the impact of using PUF in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Visibility analysis is also conducted for one and two tier scenarios.
