Portable Traffic Sensors to Enhance Arterial Mobility

THIS PAPER IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE STUDENT PAPER AWARD. Daily variations in traffic conditions demand sensors with portability and mobility. Such attributes satisfy a diverse traffic network. Prior technology contained non-mobile units for reviewing automobile activity. One common practice are inductance loop detectors. At times these loop detectors are labeled as passive sensors. Currently, the need for portable roadside devices has presented advantages and benefited connected vehicle technology. Despite the current portable sensor construction expenses, the delay research is advantageous and beneficial. This study shall review one theory to decreasing traffic impediments derived from underdeveloped signal coordination. The proposed method will analyze traffic delay concerns through relocating mobile sensors to new positions along the arterial roadways. The primary objective for the algorithm shall allow the maximum number of vehicles to flow downstream freely without traffic signal impediment. There is a unique relationship between traffic exceeding capacity and increased traveling delays. For future preparation, Highway organizations may incorporate the proposed mobile sensor theory for an optimal signal method and introduce real time data collection of arterial road portioned by relocating Bluetooth sensors.
