Hydrogen and its radiation effects in quartz crystals

Hydrogen trapped at numerous hydroxyl defects in quartz lattice serves to compensate the electron excess defects of trivalent aluminum during irradiation. We have measured near infrared (region 3100-3700 cm/sup -1/) absorption in optical samples of quartz at 77 K in as-grown crystals and upon electron irradiation at 77 K before and after 300 K-irradiation. The spectral changes have been utilized to measure the concentration of various Al-related defect centers in quartz.
