3D geologic modelling and mine planning to improve quarry and plant efficiency at cement operations

As mine operators encounter increasing opposition from regulators and public when permitting additional reserves, it is important for mining operations to maximize recovery of the permitted reserves in a cost effective manner. Effective planning at the mine can result in an extension of reserves, reduction in mining costs and reduction in plant maintenance costs. These results are achieved when a strategic mine plan, based upon the geology and limestone quality, is designed to maintain process control of raw limestone chemistry at the mine. The proposed mine planning method begins with the collection of geologic and quality data from exploration drilling and sampling. This information is utilized to construct a 3D geologic block model. Following block model creation, a strategic sequence of extraction is developed to deliver consistent raw limestone chemistry to the plant through blending and identify off-spec limestone to be sold at a lower value, beneficially reused or wasted at the mine. The challenges and engineered solutions associated with development of an operationally feasible mine plan is demonstrated through a case study of the 3D geologic modelling and mine planning method implemented at an active limestone quarry and cement plant operation.
