Adaptive and variable backoff algorithm for IEEE 802.16 to render quality of service

In this paper, the medium access control (MAC) layer scheduling of IEEE 802.16 standards is examined. This IEEE standard known also as Mobile WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a potential 4G competitor. Scheduling algorithms are playing a major task in yielding quality of service (QoS) in high speed wireless networks of next generation. IEEE 802.16 standard has not identified any standard scheduling mechanism and hence the service providers can implement the suitable algorithm. In the classification of scheduling algorithms, there exists a contention based bandwidth request method and our paper discusses the same. In this regard, the modified contention based bandwidth resolution based on variable backoff algorithm is proposed. Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 is a relevant research and a well designed scheduling algorithm will contribute to the literature. Results from the QualNet simulation validate that the modified binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm performs better in terms of delay and throughput constraints. Modification of original backoff algorithm and simulation results is explained in detail in this paper.
