A cross-shaped circular ring patch antenna for wideband applications

A cross-shaped circular ring patch antenna is presented and developed in this paper. It is observed that by introducing cross-shaped patch into the circular ring, impedance matching is improved significantly. Proposed antenna has overall dimensions of 35 × 35 × 1.6 mm3 with measured impedance bandwidth of 87.2% (2.53-6.45 GHz). In addition, partial ground plane is provided in order to prevent back reflections. Proposed antenna having measured peak gain of 5.37 dB and simulated average radiation efficiency of 94.4% throughout the operating bandwidth. Excellent radiation characteristics make this antenna suitable for various wireless applications such as IEEE 802.16 WiMAX (2.5/2.7, 3.4/3.6 GHz) and IEEE 802.11 WLAN/Wi-Fi (5.15/5.35, 5.72/5.82 GHz).
