Study on time domain electromagnetic sputtering effect from low RCS chessboard surface with EBG structure

When the artificial magnetic conductor and perfect electric conductor are periodically arranged in checkboard. The phase difference between the reflected wave from artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and perfect electric conductor (PEC) is 180°. So its radar cross section is very low. If the target covered by this type of AMC, its RCS can be reduced significantly, which brings difficulty for detection. To detect low RCS target, the time domain scattering from AMC surface is studied. It is found that the amplitude of the scattering is very large in the beginning. And it becomes low after a while. We call this phenomenon the time domain electromagnetic sputtering effect. In this paper, the time domain backward scattering is analyzed by the equivalent circuit method. The experimental system is designed to measure the time domain sputtering effect.
