Analysis on performance of biomimetic coupled processing system

Ormia ochracea can locate its specific parasite host though its interaural distance mismatches to the wavelength of host's call seriously. That is because Ormia ochracea has a special coupled auditory structure. In this paper, on the base of its constructed mathematical model, solve and analyze frequency domain responses, regard the coupled auditory structure as a two-input and two-output system, that is the coupled processing system, construct its signal processing model, propose the most sensitive frequency and the most sensitive incident angle concepts for the system and deduce their expressions. The analysis results prove that the coupled processing system can enhance the differences between signals that are received by extremely small interelement spacing sensor array validly, which makes it be used in various size-limited applications such as portable and micro-mobile platforms. In actual application such as direction finding (DF), the coupled parameters should be set properly based on the used DF mechanism to achieve a better accuracy compared with a usual array without coupled processing.
