Genetic algorithm based PI tuning of VSC-HVDC system and implementation using OPAL-RT

The never-ending concerns of reliability, controllability and security margins have become the driving factor behind the development of modern power systems. These elements were not envisaged as the decisive factors during the earlier development stages of Power Systems. All these factors helped with the resurgence of HVDC technology. With the recent developments in semiconductors and control equipment, VSC-HVDC has attracted the growing interest of researchers. The significance of this project is the development of a lab-scaled model of VSC-HVDC system, which can act as a platform to conduct several performance monitoring analyses to be performed in VSC-HVDC systems. A genetic algorithm method is used to tune the control parameters of a VSC-HVDC system. MATLAB simulation is carried out to check the performance of the VSC-HVDC system. A lab-scale VSC-HVDC system is fabricated and the control logic of the VSC-HVDC system is implemented using an OPAL-RT real-time simulator. Experimental analysis is carried out successfully on the fabricated VSC-HVDC system. Hence, a control strategy or VSC-HVDC system based research application shall be conducted using this developed testbed system.
