Properties of visual evoked potentials to alternating apparent motion

Apparent motion is a perceptual phenomenon of motion that occurs when we perceive at least two spatially separated visual stimuli under appropriate temporal conditions. After the presentation of alternating apparent motion stimuli, motion perception is replaced by the cessation of motion breakdown. This study investigates the psychophysical properties of alternate apparent motion, and examines the steady-state visual evoked potentials during perception of apparent motion. Time till breakdown was obtained to analyze the stimulus conditions that induce coherent apparent motion. Based upon the results, visual evoked potentials in response to continuously alternating apparent motion stimuli were measured. The results suggest that the larger positive potentials elicited over the right occipital to temporal regions continuously perceive alternate motion.
