Numerical modeling of synovial fluid layer

One of the most challenging problems is the wear of articular cartilage caused by the surfaces sliding over each other. It could be reduced with benefit of synovial layer which have the unique lubrication properties. This paper develops the model of fluid layer based on the Markov theory. In our study, we consider the synovial fluid as two-phase fluid with solid and liquid phase within the joint capsule to consider frictional characteristics. The solid phase formed by the wear particle detachment from the articular cartilage surface during the sliding, and liquid phase formed by the lubricant, synovial fluid. We found the mean of the distribution and the changes in the deviation of the state of contact ç(t) between the articulating surfaces during sliding, and estimate the survival of the articulating surfaces from tribological point of view during the joint activity.
