Calculation of the external parameters of overhead insulated cables considering proximity effects

In this paper, a formulation based on the method of moments is used to compute the capacitance and external inductance of bare and insulated cables used in overhead lines considering proximity effects. The considered formulation is more rigorous than routines available in electromagnetic transient simulators for the calculation of cable parameters, in which proximity effects are not taken into account. It is also more efficient than calculation methods based on the finite element method (FEM), which requires the discretization of the whole computational space. Application examples considering closely-spaced cables are used to illustrate the influence of proximity effects and dielectric coating on cable parameters. These examples are also used to validate the proposed formulation, using FEM as reference, and to test the validity of the simplified formulation used in the Alternative Transients Program to calculate overhead cable parameters.
