Evaluation of the toroidal cellular simulation structure under users' mobility, time-varying traffic, and dynamic channel assignment

In this paper, the performance of the toroidal cellular simulation structure under users' mobility, time-varying traffic, and dynamic channel assignment is evaluated. The toroidal cellular simulation structure has been proposed to effectively eliminate the so called edge effect (elimination of the inflow/outflow of handoff traffic streams to/from the examined area). However, in the toroidal cellular simulation structure appears the so called wrapping effect (the effect of an event at a cell may ripple back to that cell through chains of adjacent cells). Both the edge and wrapping effects may significantly bias performance modeling of wireless mobile systems. The wrapping effect effectively disappears as the number of considered cells in the cellular mesh structure increases. The effect of users' mobility factor and burstiness of new call arrivals on the system performance are evaluated as function of the total number of considered cells in the cellular mesh structure for fixed and dynamic channel assignment strategies. Numerical results of the different performance metrics show that for most of the considered evaluation scenarios, simulation results are close to the convergence value with a toroidal cellular structure of 37 cells (i.e., four rings of cells).
