System optimization with active power control during high traffic in cellular CDMA

A concept of active power control for the CDMA system is described through which the dynamic optimization of the system can be performed for the time-varying cellular traffic demands. In particular, the capacity of a code division multiple access system is optimized for high traffic concentrated areas by using an active power control approach. As a simulation example of this approach, an optimized system is first considered with even distribution of traffic. The system is then perturbed with unevenly distributed cellular traffic arising due to the congestion on some of the freeways. Adjustments are made to the transmit powers for the cell sites of interest and the capacity is re-optimized for the changed traffic conditions. This results in a dramatic improvement both in terms of capacity and quality of service compared to the case when the system is not re-optimized for the changed traffic conditions i.e., using the static solution currently in practice. The results are presented for the capacity and quality levels achieved using the dynamic approach of the paper.
