SKA1-LOW: Design and scientific objectives

The SKA1 radio telescope is the important next step in radio astronomy. It is one of the largest scientific endeavors in history and it aims to solve some of the biggest questions in the field of astronomy. It will consist of two radio telescope systems: SKA1_LOW, observing in the range of frequency between 50 MHz and 350 MHz, and SKA1 MID working in the mid-frequency range from 0.35 GHz up to 13.8 GHz. The SKA1-LOW telescope will be an aperture-array located in Western Australia, and its scientific objectives will prioritize studies of the Epoch of Reionization and Pulsar physics. This paper aim to provide a general overview of the SKA 1-LOW Telescope, including its scientific program, capabilities and architecture.
