Kay Goss grew up on a small family farm in Arkansas. Her father was a retired engineer, and from a young age, Goss was his assistant. She grew up driving the tractor, operating the plow, hauling hay, and riding horses. A spring and a creek, both prone to flooding, converged on the family property, which also happened to sit in the southern swath of the United States where enough tornados rip through the area to earn it the name Tornado Alley. With neighbors' homes being damaged, she saw firsthand the need to be prepared for natural emergencies.
