Simulation of heating transfer in living biomass under microwave hyperthermia

It is essential for developers and users of hyperthermia systems to predict, measure and interpret correctly the biomass thermal and vascular response to heating. Modeling of heat transfer in living biomass is a means towards this goal. In this work, the physical significance of the bioheat transfer equation is explained. The steady-state solution of the one-dimensional bioheat transfer equation is obtained in a computer assuming the biomass to be semi-infinite in extent. These solutions yield the thermal profiles in the biomass. Effects of the various parameters have been discussed and an analytical method has been developed to obtain the microwave power and other parameters required producing a given thermal profile. This would be of great use in the practical application of microwave hyperthermia.
