Optimum schedule and size of BESS in the low voltage network with high penetration of solar rooftops to maintain voltages within acceptable limit

Thanks to incentive policies for the development of solar generation technologies, the world has recorded such an expensive generation technology largely deployed in daily life. It is expected a similar prospect to battery energy storage system (BESS) which is a multi-benefit solution with high penetration of renewable energy in general and solar rooftops in particular. In low voltage networks with high penetration of solar rooftops, voltages may rise dramatically. Standing on the utility view point, this paper investigates the minimum cost and size of BESS which is needed to help maintain voltages to be within the acceptable limits. Based on perfect day-ahead forecast of generation and load, optimum schedule of the BESS is obtained. In addition, this paper also considers the aging degradation of BESS. Using Matlab 2015b, the proposed method is simulated in a simplified network of Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), Thailand [1] for the peak day with time interval of one hour.
