A three-dimensional image ray tracing (3D-IRT) method for indoor wireless channel characterisation

The rapid growth of wireless communications has resulted in an urgent need for the understanding of the indoor propagation channel. In this paper, a 3-D model for the characterisation of indoor channel is presented. This model is based on a vector three-dimensional image ray tracing (3D-IRT) which takes all the internal walls, floors, and ceilings into account. The channel impulse response can be obtained for given transmitter and receiver positions. It is well known that the ray tracing models suffer from the excess computational time and memory requirements. In order to increase the computation efficiency without decreasing the accuracy of the prediction, the proposed technique in this paper sets a threshold level. Questions linked to how to set this threshold and how accuracy and efficiency of this technique are discussed.
