Vehicle travel data based evaluation of achievable PEV penetration rate from distribution network capacity perspective

Due to growing concerns for pollution caused by gasoline powered vehicles, countries around the globe are becoming increasingly aware of a promising means of transportation-plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). Despite their incomparable advantages over traditional vehicles in emission reduction and energy saving, PEVs impose significant pressure on the existing power systems. Therefore, understanding achievable PEV penetration rate from distribution network capacity perspective is crucial. In this study, first, a mathematical optimization model involving distribution network constraints are formulated and linearized to assess the maximum penetration rate of PEVs. Second, incorporating real-world data revealing the travelling trajectories of traditional taxis in an urban area in China, we evaluate the penetration rate of plug-in electric taxis (PETs) under distribution network constraints. By setting a time filter, we extract the distribution of PET charging demands in the region considered and assign them to the nearest bus for charging. We then apply the model to solve for the maximum percentage of traditional taxis that can be electrified without undermining the distribution network safe operation.
