Analysis and validation of reactive power compensation by transformerless multilevel inverterusing SPWM and modified SVPWM strategies

Quality and quantity of the power being transmitted is an important datum to utilize the full potential of the existing transmission line networks. This paper presents a STATCOM having transformerless Cascaded Multilevel Inverter(CMI) with level shifted modified Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation(SVPWM) technique that provides both reactive power compensation and harmonic reduction. Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) theory is adopted and the DC link voltage is maintained constant by feedback control that provide better dynamic profile. A comparison is made in terms of dynamic and steady state characteristics of modified SVPWM with the conventional modulation strategy. Performance of the STATCOM is evaluated using Matlab/ SIMULINK.
