A new control algorithm of voltage source converter systems for medium- and high-power applications

Medium- and high-voltage power converter systems are usually operated at low switching frequencies to minimize the switching losses of the semiconductor switches. However, the majority of control and modulation methods used today have originally been developed for low-voltage power converter with high switching frequencies. This paper presents a novel control method based on Quasi-Newton iterative control algorithm, which is able to achieve the desired control objective, regardless of the switching frequencies. A Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and a shunt active power filter based on the proposed control method are investigated to study its effectiveness. The validity of the proposed method has been verified by the offline simulation via PSCAD/EMTDC.
