A Design Study of 5G Antennas Optimized Using Genetic Algorithms

This paper presents the design of three antenna structures of interest for 5G applications. Antenna designs include: (1) pixelated patch, (2) patch with shorting pins and a (3) monopole antenna. Each of the antenna designs are optimized to operate at desired multiple frequency bands while maintaining high gain. These antenna designs are optimized using genetic algorithms, sometimes referred to as evolutionary algorithms. The optimized antenna designs are fabricated and tested over a wide frequency band for return loss and gain. Simulations are carried out using a commercially available finite element modeling tool, and the measured and simulation results are presented. This paper highlights the benefits of each of these antenna designs for use in 5G applications.
