Detection of Food Decay Products Using Functionalized One-Dimensional Titania Nanotubular Arrays

One-dimensional titania nanotubular arrays (TNAs) synthesized by electrochemical anodization have been extensively studied for gas sensing applications. The present investigation is designed to explore the possible use of functionalized TNA for the electrochemical detection of volatile organic biomarkers (VOBs) associated with food decay products. Dimethyl sulfide, which is a VOB of decaying egg, is successfully detected using cobalt functionalized TNA, whereas nickel functionalization of TNA is useful in detecting ethyl acetate, which is a VOB of a decayed tomato. Choosing appropriate elements for functionalizing titania nanotube arrays was found to be necessary for the electrochemical detection of VOBs.
